Why epoxy floors fail
Coating failures get blamed on the epoxy far more often than they should. In the field, the overwhelming majority trace back to what happened to the slab before the first coat, or to what nobody checked.
It bonded to a sealer, a curing compound, or an old film. Those layers are invisible once dry, and every one of them is a bond breaker. Grinding takes the slab back to sound concrete so the epoxy grips the substrate, not a layer sitting on it.
Troweled slabs are dense and closed. A coating spread over a polished, unopened surface has nothing to key into and releases in sheets — usually starting at traffic lanes and door thresholds.
Vapor moving up through a slab with no working vapor retarder blisters and delaminates coatings. Prep can't fix that, but identifying it before the coating goes down saves the whole job.
Machines can't reach the last few inches. If the perimeter, thresholds, and around-column areas aren't hand-ground, the coating peels inward from every edge no matter how good the field looks.
Oil, hydraulic fluid, salt, and efflorescence all keep epoxy from wetting the concrete. These get identified, degreased, and ground out before profiling — not coated over.
Profile requirements
CSP (Concrete Surface Profile) is a 1–9 roughness scale from the International Concrete Repair Institute. The numbers below are typical ranges — your manufacturer's data sheet is the final word, and we prep to that.

Details that decide the job
A walk-behind grinder leaves a band of untouched concrete at every wall, column, door, and floor drain. We hand-grind those with edging tools so the profile runs wall to wall — because coatings fail from the edge in, and a skipped perimeter is the cheapest way to lose a floor.
We open and clean cracks and joints during prep so your installer can decide how to treat them — fill, honor, or track. Coating straight over an unopened crack telegraphs it back within months.
Las Vegas slabs are often dry, but not always: irrigation, slab-on-grade with no vapor retarder, and post-tension garages all surprise people. We flag moisture risk, run a plastic-sheet check, and can coordinate ASTM F2170 relative-humidity probe testing when a system requires documented numbers. Mitigation product and its installation stay in the coating installer's scope.

Tight schedules and finished houses. We work with shrouded machines and HEPA extraction, hand-grind the perimeter and apron, and leave the slab vacuumed so your flake or polyaspartic installer can start the same day or the next morning.
Larger square footage, older slabs, and mixed histories — line paint, adhesive, patched trenches, and forklift wear all in one floor. We phase the work so operations keep running and profiles stay consistent between sections.
Kitchens, breweries, showrooms, and clinics where the coating spec is written by an architect or the system manufacturer. Send the data sheet and we prep to it, then document what was delivered before your installer mobilizes.
